About the Tour
Come and follow in the footsteps of the earliest known people of South Africa - the San and the Khoi Khoi, often referred to collectively as the Khoisan. These groups have lived in this region for tens of thousands of years and represent some of the most ancient branches of the human family alive today. Genetic studies show that the ancestors of the San and Khoi Khoi split from other human populations very early in our species’ history, carrying some of the deepest genetic lineages of Homo Sapiens still found in people today.
We begin our journey at !Khwa Ttu San Heritage Centre and Nature Reserve, located on the West Coast of the Cape of Good Hope. Here you’ll learn about San culture and history from San guides themselves, explore exhibitions that share their perspectives, and discover how this heritage connects with the broader story of humanity’s earliest inhabitants. The centre combines culture, nature and community-led interpretation to bring the San legacy to life.
From there, we head inland to the Cederberg Wilderness Area, a dramatic mountain landscape known for its deep gorges, unique sandstone formations and some of the oldest rock art sites in the world. The rock paintings here were created over thousands of years by the San and Khoi Khoi, depicting animals, human figures and symbolic imagery that offer a fascinating window into ancient belief systems and way of life.
Along the way, we’ll stop for a traditional fresh seafood experience at Die Strandloper on the beach at Langebaan, a celebration of Khoisan culture and hospitality. The name “Strandloper” refers to a coastal foraging group of people associated with the Khoisan people, called the Strandlopers or "beach foragers".
We will also stop at the breathtaking Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve, where rolling white dunes create an exciting opportunity for adventure, from quad biking and sandboarding to wandering quietly through the ever-shifting sands of the Atlantis Dunes.
After arriving in the Cederberg, we’ll spend time hiking to various ancient rock art sites tucked away in caves and overhangs - including iconic shelters where you can see remarkable ochre paintings - and deepen our understanding of the spiritual and artistic traditions of the region’s earliest people.
Optionally, on a clear evening we could visit the Cederberg Astronomical Observatory, one of South Africa’s premier star-gazing locations. Far from urban light pollution, it offers guided telescope viewings and insights into the night sky, connecting the story of human origins to the broader universe.
Expect nights under endless stars, days on off-road tracks, and a mix of camping and glamping as we journey deep into the wild heart of the Cederberg Wilderness Area.

We will stay for the night at !Khwa Ttu in one of their luxury self-catering cottages. There is an excellent restaurant on site using Khoisan recipes and local ingredients. The restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch, but one can order dinner to be delivered to your cottage, or you can cook or braai (barbeque) yourself.

Breakfast is included.
One bag of fire wood is included.
All other meals are excluded.

Day 2:
Breakfast at !Khwa Ttu.
Visit the San Heritage Centre before driving to Paternoster where we will stay for the night.
On the way you have two options:
You can go for an all-day informal fresh seafood dining experience at the Strandloper, served right on the beach with your feet in the sand at ZAR 410 p.p., or you can go for the ultimate but slightly more formal fine dining experience at one of South Africa's award winning restaurants, Wolfgat, a tiny but world-renowned fine-dining destination in the charming coastal village of Paternoster.
Perched in a beautifully restored 130-year-old fisherman’s cottage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Wolfgat is famous for its intimate seven-course tasting menu that celebrates local, seasonal flavours drawn from the surrounding West Coast landscape and seashore. A vegetarian option is available. A set price of ZAR 1450 p.p. is charged for either standard or vegetarian.
Meal options have to be confirmed prior as bookings at both are essential.
Accommodation for the night will be on the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve at the Sea Shack right on the beach.
Situated, quite literally, on the water’s edge, Sea Shack offers casual, self-catering holiday accommodation. Not camping and not a hotel, Sea Shack offers glamping style accommodation where you can keep clean, warm and live simply while you holiday, adventure, rest or relax on one of the Cape’s more beautiful coastlines.
This reserve boasts the last manually controlled lighthouse to be built in South Africa. It is usually the first South African lighthouse to be seen by ships coming from Europe. The lighthouse was built in 1936 on Castle Rock. The light stands at a height of 80m above sea level and casts a beam, which is visible for about 50km.
There is no restaurant at the Sea Shack, so if you are still hungry after your Strandloper or fine dining experience, you could cook, or braai yourself. There is a fully equipped galley-style communal kitchen, and your camper also comes with a mini fridge and all the necessary camping gear. We will stop at a supermarket on the way to stock up on food and drinks. Please plan for both dinner and breakfast.

Day 3
After morning coffee and breakfast, we will continue driving to Rocherpan Nature Reserve, a seaside reserve on the West Coast of the Western Cape. If you don't want to prepare breakfast yourself, there is the option of stopping in Paternoster at one of the many restaurants in town.
Home to over 180 bird species, including pink flamingos, white pelicans and the endangered African black oystercatcher, Rocherpan is one of the West Coast’s premier birding destinations. Walk serene trails along the wetlands and shoreline, watch southern right whales from the beach, or simply relax surrounded by wildflowers, wildlife and endless skies.
Eco-friendly cabins, picnic spots, hiking and mountain-biking opportunities make Rocherpan a perfect escape for adventurers, photographers and peaceful retreats.
Accommodation for the night will be in one of their self-contained eco-friendly cabins. We will stop at a supermarket en route, so please prepare for both dinner and breakfast. Each cabin has a kitchen, braai area and all the necessary utensils, cutlery and crockery.
On the way we will stop at the West Coast Fossil Park where you can see fossils of the extinct short-necked giraffe, African bear and saber-toothed cats that used to roam the area.

One bag of fire wood is included.
Entrance to the West Coast Fossil Park is included.
Daily tai chi and/or qigong practice included (optional).

Day 4
After breakfast and maybe even a short hike, we will drive to Africamps De Pakhuys in the Cederberg Mountains.
The journey takes us via Clanwilliam and the scenic De Pakhuis Pass. During spring (August–September), the De Pakhuis Pass transforms into a spectacular natural garden. After winter rains, the normally rugged terrain bursts into colour with carpets of daisies, succulents, and other endemic wildflowers. The winding mountain road offers breathtaking viewpoints, making it a favourite route for photographers, nature lovers, and road-trippers exploring the Cederberg.
The historic town of Clanwilliam is the heart of South Africa’s rooibos tea country. This naturally caffeine-free “red bush” tea grows only in this region and has been enjoyed since the Khoisan people first harvested the wild plants centuries ago. Today, you can experience the story firsthand with a rooibos tasting at The House of Rooibos, discovering its smooth, earthy flavour with hints of honey and vanilla, or lighter green rooibos varieties.
A visit to Clanwilliam offers not just a cup of tea, but a taste of the landscape where this uniquely South African brew originates from.
Tonight you will be staying in a boutique canvas tent at AfriCamps, De Pakhuys, and on arrival you can choose to just relax in your own private hot tub, or go on one of the many walks meandering through boulders across the farm and explore waterfalls, rock pools and rock art on the way.
There is no restaurant on site, and as accommodation is on a self-catering basis, we will allow for enough time in Clanwilliam to stop at a supermarket for food and drinks. Each glampng unit has a kitchen, braai area and all the necessary utensils, cutlery and crockery.
***
Rooibos tea tasting is included.
All meals are excluded.
Daily tai chi and/or qigong practice included (optional).

Day 5
After enjoying breakfast or just a morning coffee or tea on your patio, we’ll take a scenic 30-minute drive to Cederberg Ridge, the starting point of the Sevilla Rock Art Trail.
This easy 5 km walk follows the Brandewyn River and visits nine remarkable sites showcasing some of the oldest Khoisan Rock Art in the region. Though the Sevilla Rock Art Trail does not include any major gradients, it is a 5km walk on uneven, sometimes rocky ground and will take about 2½ to 3 hours to complete, depending on how long you stay at each site.
Afterwards you can have something to eat and drink at the Cedreberg Ridge restaurant before we take on our first off road adventure driving a moderately easy 4x4 track to the Cederberg Park area through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the Cederberg Mountains. On the way we will stop at the historical Wupperthal Village, ‘Lot’s Wife’ - an easy 5 to 10 min walk to a famous sandstone pillar resembling a woman in prayer - and the Cederberg Wine Estate, arguably one of the best in the area, if not in South Africa. Here we will do a wine tasting and stock up on wine for the next 3 days.
Wupperthal is a charming, historic village tucked deep in the rugged Cederberg Mountains and only accessible by 4WD. Founded in 1830 as a Moravian mission station, this remote settlement is known for its striking white-washed, thatched-roof buildings and timeless rural way of life, with small-scale rooibos farming and traditional crafts such as hand-made veldskoene (leather shoes) still part of daily life.
You will be staying in a glamping unit at Cederberg Park for the night. There is an excellent restaurant on site, but you could also braai or cook yourself as the tent is fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Tonight, if weather permits, you will also have the option to visit the Cederberg Astronomical Observatory with guided stargazing sessions where guests can observe planets, star clusters, and distant galaxies through powerful telescopes while learning about the southern hemisphere’s spectacular constellations.
***
Entrance to Sevilla Hiking Trail is included.
Entrance to the Cederberg Astronomical Observatory is excluded and requires prebooking: ZAR 120 p.p.
All meals are excluded.
Daily tai chi and/or qigong practice included (optional).

Day 6
Before we drive to our final camping destination, Lylius Private Campsite, there will be time to relax, swim in the river, go on short hikes, or if we didn’t get to it the day before, visit the Cederberg Wine Estate.
You also have the option in exploring another two easy walks in the area, Truitjieskraal and the Stadsaal Caves, both only a 15 min drive away. Optional, but highly recommendable.
Truitjieskraal and the Stadsaal Caves are two of the Cederberg’s most fascinating natural and cultural attractions, set within the rugged beauty of the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve. Truitjieskraal is celebrated for its dramatic sandstone formations and interpretive trails that wind past ancient San and Khoi rock art, offering insight into the region’s rich archaeological heritage. The area is also popular with rock climbers who come to challenge the striking cliffs.
Just a short distance away, the Stadsaal Caves - meaing “City Hall” in Afrikaans - are a series of open, wind-eroded caverns surrounded by remarkable rock art, including depictions of elephants and human figures believed to be hundreds to thousands of years old. The cavernous spaces and light-and-shadow play make it a rewarding visit for photographers and history lovers alike. Both sites require a permit – ZAR 40 p.p., and make excellent day trips for hikers and explorers eager to experience Cederberg’s unique landscape and ancient heritage.
Our drive to Lylius Campsite will take us via the beautiful Botterkloof Pass and although not a 4x4 trail, it is a gravel road and requires a high clearance vehicle.
We will allow enough time to get there early enough to set up camp and to get comfortable for the night. The campsite comes with a private bathroom and scullery. There is a swimming pool on site and some easy hikes to do.
We won’t be passing any stores en route, so we will plan accordingly when we stop at a supermarket on day 4.
***
All meals are excluded.
Permit to Truitjieskraal and the Stadsaal Caves are excluded: ZAR 40 p.p.
Daily tai chi and/or qigong practice included (optional).

Day 7
After breakfast, and before we drive back to Cape Town, you’ll have some free time to enjoy the surrounding area, whether that’s going on a short hike in the area, going for a swim, or simply relaxing and soaking in the peaceful environment.
On our way back to Cape Town, we will stop for lunch in the historic town of Tulbagh.
Tulbagh is a charming historic town nestled in a valley and surrounded by the dramatic Witzenberg Mountains in the Western Cape. The town is best known for its beautifully restored Cape Dutch buildings along Church Street - one of the most complete historic streets in South Africa.
After a devastating earthquake in 1969, many of these heritage buildings were carefully restored, giving Tulbagh its unique character and old-world charm. Today, visitors enjoy strolling through the historic centre, exploring local cafés, wine estates, museums, and art galleries, all set against a scenic backdrop of vineyards and mountains.
